There is a saying in Wen Xin Diao Long: "Speak a thousandsongs and know the sound, watch a thousand swords and then knowthe instrument". After years of reading the posts, Mr. Linchipersistently believes that since the European IndustrialRevolution, western learning has spread to the east, and theright to speak in science, technology, medicine, culture, andart has been formulated by Westerners, and many standards inthese areas are the final say by them. Our Chinese calligraphyhas a sacred and holy status like religion, and this uniquenational cultural form of Chinese calligraphy has also beenclumsily dragged into the ranks of Western art and 'married'to Western 'art'.
China should have its own firm cultural confidence:calligraphy is a unique national treasure of our Chinese nation, and calligraphy is not just art. The so-called 'art' in the Westis just a borrowed term that has only been heard in China fornearly 100 years. Before 'art', Chinese calligraphy had existedfor more than 2000 years. Calligraphy can encompass art, butart can never encompass our Chinese calligraphy. PerhapsChinese calligraphy is a cultural peak that Westerners cannever catch up with. A calligrapher with taste should devotetheir entire life to cultivating cultural heritage andcultivating their own character. With this basic skill, it ispossible to achieve the wonderful expression of 'writing likea god' under the pen tip. Western art, no matter how much itis tossed around, is only a technical activity inthree-dimensional space.
Throughout the history of Western art, many of the worksI have seen have only stayed at the level of "technique" to playwith skills, without rising to the level of "Dao". Goodcalligraphy works in China are the crystallization of the soul,a high-dimensional presentation on the level of "Dao", and thetwo cannot be discussed in the same language.
Without higher dimensional thinking and cognition, it isimpossible to learn Chinese calligraphy well. As the sayinggoes, 'Silence and stillness bring about a sense ofconnection,' and 'the wonder of application lies in one heart.'.If you don't understand these principles, talking aboutcalligraphy is just scratching the surface. Therefore, actively defending the sacred and holy status of Chinesecalligraphy should be a specific measure of whether a Chinesecalligrapher has cultural identity and confidence in their owncountry. Chinese calligraphy not only has laws and forms, butmore importantly, it also needs to have spirit and charm.
Chinese calligraphy is somewhat similar to Zen meditationin Chinese Buddhism. Any attempt to cheat or take shortcuts isimpossible. Only after years of cross legged meditation, fasting and chanting Buddha, practicing precepts andcultivating one's mind... When the time comes, naturally oneday you will "understand" and the charm of your own works willcome out. The process of learning calligraphy is not only aboutpracticing techniques, but also about enhancing one'spersonality and cultivating one's soul. Kung Fu is beyondcalligraphy, and the underlying logic of Chinese calligraphyis not only about techniques, personal talents, and talents, but also a solid foundation of Chinese culture and the patternsand emotions of calligraphers.
Chinese calligraphy is a brilliant cultural treasure leftby our ancestors to humanity. Our Chinese culture will surelylead the world, and this unique and charming cultural form ofChinese calligraphy will forever shine brightly in the culturalhistory of humanity.
